More Holy Island of Lindisfarne

Bird Watching
The Sportsman has an excellent location for bird lovers being within viewing distance of the Farne Islands and Beadnell ...
Holy Island is approximately nine miles north of the Sportsman Hotel.

The island is served by a paved causeway which is tidal and offers two crossing times within twenty four hours.
Lindisfarne the old Saxon name is not so commonly used but is used more in conection with Christians and pilgrims who visit the island in their thousands.
The population of Holy Island is about 150 people but these numbers swell to 500,000 people in the height of summer.
Birdwatchers, artists, photographers, fishermen, painters, walkers, golfers and holidaymakers all enjoy the attractions of this special place.
Our staff will vbe only too happy to offer advice and give times for crossings. One of our bar staff has a family owned business on Holy Island.

Holy island and the Sportsman Hotels both offer a friendly welcome to the visitor to Northumberland and is a fantastic place to set off on a day excursion. We can offer advice on crossing times through tide charts or for an easier way check out the tide from the front of the hotel. The Farne islands and Bamburgh are also a wothwhile detour whilst heading towards Holy Island. A great stop off pub on the way is the Olde Ship in Seahouses which is a real traditional pub with some character locals. the fish and chip shop in Beadnell is also a great lunch break with great views if you decide not to try the fresh picked crab from the Holy island fishermen. We often have on our menu Holy Island native oysters which are farmed and supplied by James Sutherland, they are delicious!
