More Alnwick Gardens

The Alnwick Gardens are a 10 minute drive away from our hotel and the benefits of staying at the Sportsman far outway making Alnwick your base. The gardens are an ideal excursion especially away from peak times.Alnwick Castle should be in my opinion visited first, maybe taking in lunch at the cafe or if it is later enjoy an evening meal at the Sanctuary restaurant within the grounds. The castle has laid host to many famous films,Harry Potter being probably the most well known. We usually have up to date tariffs at the Sportsman for those wishing to visit the gardens. The treetop restaurant is also a must see as it is the largest tree house in the world and offers very good Northumbrian cooking. There is an admission fee to the garden to use the treehouse this can be expensive if you want to have lunch at the treehouse. The Alnwick garden project began in March 1996 and was opened by the present duchess.
Prior to this the gardens have had a remarkable history being at their most complete in the mid 19th century when the 4th duke called upon a certain William Andrews Nesfield to re-create stunning new gardens in the Italian Renaissance Style.
Capability Brown and Decimus Burton the latter famed for his Palm House at Kew Gardens have had major links with the garden over the years.

Features:

The Grand Cascade is the largest water feature of its kind in the UK.
The Cascade runs down the main north south axis of the site and forms the centrepiece for the entire garden. Constructed in a series of 30 weirs, 7,260 gallons of water per minute tumble down it at peak flow.

The Poison Garden:
Come face to face with some of the most deadly plants in the world. From belladonna (deadly nightshade) to tobacco plants, this garden is not for the faint hearted!

These are just two of the fourteenor so different features within the Alnwick Garden site.

For more info please go to our links page where you can go direct to the Alnwick Garden web site.

As an alternative day excursion why not go to Howick Gardens which have been heavily praised
by the many visitors who have visited whilst staying at the Sportsman Hotel.
